October's Birthstones: Opal and Tourmaline

The cool air has finally graced us with its presence and the colorful leaves are finally falling. There's only one thing missing to enjoy fall to its fullest - a new piece of one-of-a-kind jewelry, of course!

For all you October babies out there, opal and tourmaline are the names of your game.

What is Opal?

Diamonds might traditionally be a girl’s best friend, but it may be time for them to scoot on over because opal is one of the most spectacular gemstones out there. It's also one of the world’s most popular gems. And you’re in luck because opals are a wonderful stone for jewelry of all kinds – pendants, rings, earrings, and more.

Opal is formed as water runs down the earth and collects silicon deposits, meaning it usually contains 10 percent water.  And because of the unique way in which this gemstone comes about, it's known for the rainbow flashes of color it reveals, which can be observed in three different situations:

  • When the stone is moved
  • When the light source is moved
  • When the angle of the observation is changed

The natural beauty and uniqueness of the stone mean opal jewelry is sure to stand out – take our opal aquamarine studs for example:

These dainty gemstone earrings are so versatile – they're low-key enough for every day, or fancy enough for those special moments.

In fact, we’ll even let you in on a little secret… These studs were worn on CW’s “Jane the Virgin” by Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez)!

What is Tourmaline?

October's the month of popular gemstones because tourmaline is also another of the world’s most popular gemstones. If you want to feel like royalty, this is the stone for you. In fact, in Portugal in the 1500s tourmaline was used to make jewelry for royalty and wealthy citizens.

Because it comes in a variety of colors, tourmaline is very versatile in the making of bohemian jewelry.  When you're just looking to add a colorful touch to an outfit or to make a statement, we're sure we have a tourmaline piece that will suit you.

Here’s a glimpse of two of our personal favorites, our green ombré ring and our blue ombré ring.

Here are a few items we're sure you won’t be able to say no to and trust us, they're a treat that is well worth it:
