The Raw Beauty of Birthstone Jewelry

Assigning particular gemstones to each month of the calendar is a modern tradition that dates back to biblical times. In the past, it was believed that wearing a gem during its given month heightened its healing powers. In order to obtain the full effect of the gems though, you needed to own all twelve and alternate them monthly.

While we certainly love the idea of wearing twelve gemstones year-round, just focusing in on your birthstone can bring a little magic and energy into your life.

At the very least, choosing a gift of birthstone jewelry for a loved one is a thoughtful way to acknowledge your connection.

January

Garnet is the birthstone assigned to the month of January. Bright and colorful, garnets are most commonly known to be red but can also be found in shades of orange, yellow, green, purple, brown, blue, black, pink, and colorless varieties.

Used since the Bronze Age as gemstones for jewelry and ornaments, garnets have been found in Egyptian tombs and in ancient Roman signet rings and wax seals.

When it comes to benefits, garnet is said to aid circulation and blood-related issues. It is often thought of as the stone of love and relationships, making it an excellent choice for someone special in your life.

April

April babes might be considered the luckiest of all with their birthstone represented by quartz and diamond.

Quartz is one of the most well known minerals on earth and comes in many varieties and colors. The word quartz comes from the Greek word for ice, as the gem was thought to be a form of permanent ice that was so cold it never thawed out.

Usually transparent with a hint of diamond-like sparkle, Herkimer diamonds are the most powerful of all quartz. They are named after Herkimer County, New York, USA, the main place they are found. They are the high-energy seekers of the crystal world and are said to magnify the influence of other stones too.

An alternative April birthstone is white topaz, which sparkles just like a diamond.

These gems have been around for centuries, with ancient Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians all in awe of them. Cleopatra is said to have loved emeralds so much she claimed ownership of every single emerald mine in Egypt during her rule.
